Briefing: This Monthly forum of the ETUI will focus on gender equality as an important theme included in the recently published book on the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union (CFREU) and its relation to employment. Mélanie Schmitt will introduce this third volume of the trilogy on fundamental social rights at European level prepared by the members of the ETUI Transnational Trade Union Rights (TTUR) Expert Network. She will highlight the added value of the Charter and the prevailing lack of willingness to fully exploit its potential.
The presentation by Csilla Kollonay Lehoczky will deal with the reasons of the slow progress of ‘true gender equality’ in the society and will argue that establishing equal role of men in family, in formerly ‘female roles’ is indispensable for achieving equal role of women at work. She will also explain how CFREU provisions (Art. 23, 33), as well as the Work-Life Balance Directive could/should be utilized to achieve or at least approach these goals.
Niklas Bruun will talk about the impact of the Articles 20-21 of the CFREU on equality and non-discrimination. He will analyse what their impact has been in the practice of the Court of Justice of the European Union and what further potential they carry for the future of the European Union.
